I started this project by writing most of my idea down in my sketchbook and creating drawings in my sketchbook too. My ideas started out by thinking about things I see on the street that kind of annoy me, I started to draw ideas around people bing addicted to looking at their phones. I wanted to highlight the problem of people being too distracted by their phones to see the world, I though about making stickers and posters however I started to dislike this idea.
I then used this same kind of idea to relate to something that I am interested in, robotics and A.I development. I had some ideas about creating a charging station for your phone but it was a humanoid face to make people think about the possibility of sentience in technology. How would people feel using a humanoid body or head to their own advantage, would they feel bad? I wanted to perhaps show a glimpse into the future an pose the question ‘If machines became sentient would they be seen as equal to humans?’.
I had ideas about walking around Bristol dressed as a robot giving ‘free android hugs’ to perhaps challenge peoples ideas about the future, if I robot could love would it be given the same respect. I also had a small idea about dressing as a crash test dummy and presenting it doing dangerous things that people do every day on the streets such as smoking at petrol stations etc.
I then , with inspiration from my digital adventures, had some ideas about creating propaganda for conspiracy theory’s through posters and stickers around Bristol to change someone’s day, I wanted to present people with these absolutely crazy ideas. I also had an idea of creating a fake conspiracy club and direct people to it just to find out it doesn’t exist.
One of my main ideas I had was to create posters and stickers directing them at businessmen and businesswomen challenging their decisions to work office jobs, asking them if they are really happy, if they see a future in their boring jobs. This stemmed from me hearing about how much depression comes from office related work. I want to question people’s idea of success.
I created some sticker designs initially to get some of my ideas out.
This idea is something I am going to continue developing. With this project I have to be careful in my imagery used as I want to use strong imagery but I need to think about how it will effect everyone who sees it, even though it is directed at certain people. One thing I am toying with at the moment is deciding where to put the posters and stickers, I think the best places would be in train stations, on trains, at bus stops, really any place that would be used as a means of travel to an office job or place of work.
After creating these stickers I took some designs from my sketchbook and made some posters that propose to people ‘are they happy in their job’.
After this I continued developing posters and decided to create one that was much more depressing and negative, I want to really shove these idea in peoples faces so they actually stop and think about their life, their jobs. In my opinion I think that people in office jobs are not necessarily happy with their job.
