Photography in Magazines

Ana Strumpf

Taking a step further from magazines like Kinfolk that rely on photography for their magazines I started to think about the use of photography and illustration in the same image. Illustrators like Ana Strumpf who has done work for vogue creates drawings over photography and creates this really striking mixed media images.

I really like how she blends the two medias together to create really intriguing covers. I also like how you can tell that she is having fun when doing it. She started this by doing these re-covers of magazines of vogue magazines and more. It hit off really well and she started getting work for it.

Yayoi Kusama

Kusama does similar work with drawing over images.

I find her work very simplistic but it is very effective, and I think that is a running theme in this type of mixed media as half of the work is already done for the illustrator. No matter how interesting and effective the image is it may not be as impressive as a fully illustrated piece. That isn't to say this shouldn't be done, I think it's great and looks amazing in magazines. I think it marries the two main concepts of magazines today, pushing the real world into a weirder and more visually striking place.

Harry Campbell

Looking through Harry Campbell's work I noticed one piece where he used photography in his illustration and I though it was really good. His work isn't normally photo orientated so it feels like a really nice excursion from his usual work.

I created some work inspired by this way of working which can be found below and in my digital work page for this project.
