DIGITAL MAGAZINE - CLICK TO VIEW

Mark Smith

Mark Smith is an editorial Illustrator. His work interests me as I see it as very impressive, he is obviously a very skilled illustrator and he puts this to use expressing his views. His work is very visually soothing in my opinion and I think having work in a magazine that isn't to intrusive on the eyes is very important as I that editorial illustration is supposed to add to an article or opinion not overshadow it. In Smith's work he often uses the text that he is given, e.g the title of the newspaper or magazine, to his advantage. Often drawing over it or using it in the illustration. I really like this little detail in his work and I think makes his work less flat and adds some character to the images.

Photography in Magazines

Ana Strumpf Taking a step further from magazines like Kinfolk that rely on photography for their magazines I started to think about the use of photography and illustration in the same image. Illustrators like Ana Strumpf who has done work for vogue creates drawings over photography and creates this really striking mixed media images. I really like how she blends the two medias together to create really intriguing covers. I also like how you can tell that she is having fun when doing it. She started this by doing these re-covers of magazines of vogue magazines and more. It hit off really well and she started getting work for it.  Yayoi Kusama Kusama does similar work with drawing over images.  I find her work very simplistic but it is very effective, and I think that is a running theme in this type of mixed media as half of the work is already done for the illustrator. No matter how interesting and effective the image is it may not be as impressive as a fully illustrated...

The Western Sahara

Which has been in constant flux in cease-fire and currently has started again. Western Sahara conflict tests Turkey-Algeria ties  (Link) Since I had never heard of this I thought it may be something that isn't reported on as much in western media and in turn made me think it was a good thing to bring to light.

Frozen Conflicts Magazine Idea

After a tutorial with Phil I started to think about creating a magazine not just about one article or event but many. Looking into many different 'frozen conflicts' and creating a magazine around it. Perhaps working with other people on my course doing war and conflict. The main conflicts that I am interested in at the moment are the conflict of Armenia and Azerbaijan, North Korea and South Korea (as well as USA) and the not very well known Western Sahara conflict. Using these conflicts and experimenting with ideas of photography used in magazines I created some quick edited images to show frozen conflicts as literally frozen. My Chosen Articles A Quick End to a Dangerous War The Unthinkable: What Would Happen If North Korea Nuked Los Angeles? I chose these two different conflicts as I really liked the big contrast between them. Armenia and Azerbaijan is a civil war, all be it backed by superpower countries, and North Korea is a much bigger fish. With implications of nuclear ...
